Some amino acid crystals and peptide nanostructures exhibit high piezoelectric and nonlinear-optical coefficients competitive with those of the best used inorganic materials. Bioorganic materials possess inherent biocompatibility and therefore can be used for developing biocompatible optoelectronic devices.
An overview will be given of systematical investigations, underway in this domaine at the Institute of Natural Sciences / UFU / Ekaterinburg, of piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of such materials.
